Board Feet Calculation

The board foot is the standard unit of measurement in the lumber industry. Understanding how to calculate board feet is essential for estimating material quantities and comparing prices between suppliers. The formula is straightforward but easy to get wrong if you mix up your units.

The Board Foot Formula

Board Feet = (Thickness × Width × Length) ÷ 144

All dimensions in inches. For length in feet, use: (T × W × L) ÷ 12

Example: A board that is 2 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 10 feet long:

(2 × 6 × 10) ÷ 12 = 10.00 board feet

Flooring

Floor Coverage by Room Size

Board feet needed for standard 3/4-inch hardwood flooring by room dimensions. Includes a separate column with 10% waste factor, which is the minimum recommended for straight-lay installations. Add 15% for diagonal layouts and 20% for herringbone patterns.

16 x 20320267293
20 x 24480400440

Note: Board feet for 3/4" flooring equals the square footage multiplied by 0.833 (or 10/12). For 1/2" flooring, multiply square footage by 0.5. For 5/8" flooring, multiply by 0.625.

Walls & Ceilings

Wall Coverage by Board Width

Board feet of 1-inch-thick material needed to cover a wall by height and width. Coverage varies by board width because narrower boards have more tongue-and-groove overlap, meaning you need more material per square foot.

Wall (H x W ft)Sq FtBF (1x4)BF (1x6)BF (1x8)

9 x 16144487296
10 x 14140477094
10 x 2020067100134

These figures include approximately 10% additional material to account for tongue-and-groove overlap. Deduct window and door openings from the wall area before ordering. Add 5-10% extra for cutting waste.

Weight Planning

Weight by Species & Condition

Knowing the weight of your lumber is essential for structural calculations, transportation planning, and estimating shipping costs. These values represent averages -- actual weight varies with moisture content and individual specimens.

SpeciesKiln-Dried (lbs/ft³)Green (lbs/ft³)Lbs per BF (dried)
Southern Yellow Pine36523
Longleaf Heart Pine41553.4
Bald Cypress32512.7
White Oak47633.9
Red Oak44633.7
Black Walnut38583.2

Hard Maple44563.7
Poplar / Tulipwood29512.4
Douglas Fir34482.8
Eastern White Pine25362.1
Ash41483.4

To estimate total weight: multiply board feet by the "Lbs per BF" value. Example: 500 BF of kiln-dried white oak = 500 × 3.9 = 1,950 lbs. Add 20% for air-dried material that has not reached equilibrium moisture content.

Cost Estimation by Species & Grade

Approximate price ranges per board foot for reclaimed lumber. Actual pricing depends on species, grade, quantity, current inventory levels, and any custom milling required. Contact us for a specific quote.

SpeciesSelect Grade (per BF)Character GradeRustic Grade
Reclaimed Heart Pine$12 - $18$7 - $12$4 - $7
Reclaimed Cypress$10 - $16$6 - $10$3 - $6
Reclaimed White Oak$14 - $22$8 - $14$5 - $8
Reclaimed Douglas Fir$8 - $14$5 - $9$3 - $5
New S. Yellow Pine (comparison)$3 - $5$2 - $3$1 - $2
Reclaimed Mixed Species$6 - $10$4 - $7$2 - $4

Prices are approximate and subject to change based on market conditions and availability. Custom milling (T&G, shiplap, S4S) adds $1-3 per BF. Volume discounts available for orders over 500 BF. Contact us for a firm quote on your specific requirements.

Quick Reference Cards

Board Foot Shortcut

For 1-inch-thick boards, board feet equals the width in inches times the length in feet, divided by 12. A 1x6x10 board is (6 x 10) / 12 = 5 BF.

Flooring Rule of Thumb

For 3/4-inch flooring, order 10% more board feet than the square footage of the room. For 1/2-inch flooring, order 55% of the square footage plus 10% waste.

Accent Wall Estimate

Measure the wall in square feet (height x width). For 1x6 shiplap or T&G, order board feet equal to the square footage. Add 10% for waste and pattern matching.

Beam Weight Estimate

A typical reclaimed heart pine beam at 8x8 inches and 10 feet long weighs approximately 180 lbs when kiln-dried. Cypress beams of the same size weigh about 145 lbs.

Delivery Truck Capacity

A standard flatbed truck carries about 4,000-5,000 BF of 1-inch lumber. A pickup truck with a 6-foot bed can safely carry 200-400 BF depending on the species and thickness.

Nominal vs. Actual

Modern lumber: a 2x4 is 1.5 x 3.5 inches. Reclaimed lumber is often closer to true dimension: old 2x4s frequently measure 1-3/4 x 3-3/4 inches or even full 2 x 4 inches.
